Finding a Hotel in Pagosa Springs

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Relax and really get away from it all in Pagosa Springs, a small city located in southwest Colorado. Not surprisingly, Pagosa Springs is most notable for its natural hot springs, which are among the largest and hottest springs in the world. They’re so renowned, in fact, that even Oprah Winfrey is said to be fan.

But while relaxing in a hot pool is an ideal way to spend a vacation, there’s more to do in Pagosa Springs than chill out—the area is a hotbed for outdoor activities, particular at the Wolf Creek Ski Area, a popular spot for both downhill and cross country skiing in Colorado’s legendary mountains. Golf is another big attraction here.  And a range of hotels and motels offers visitors a variety of options of where to set up base.

Pagosa Springs is located at 7,000 feet (2,100 m) above sea level, and 35 mi (56 km) north of the New Mexico border. Nestled in between the deep wilderness of the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests, it’s a bit difficult to get to but well worth the drive. The closest city is Durango, located 60 mi (97 km) west on US Highway 160.

DOWNTOWN

Downtown is the place to be for those interested in taking advantage of the famous Pagosa Springs hot spring pools, and the most luxurious place to take advantage of them is at the Springs Resort and Spa. The resort provides access to 22 different hot mineral pools as well as a cold water pool and a Jacuzzi. The on-site boutique hotel offers 50 distinctive rooms, and guests are treated to 24-hour access to the hot springs, as well as vacation packages that can include golf, skiing or any other activity in the Pagosa Springs area.

Also downtown is the Oak Ridge Lodge, a full-service hotel located across from the Springs Resort. It has its own mineral-fed pool, and guests are treated to amenities like free Wi-Fi and a complimentary breakfast. A few blocks away the First Inn of Pagosa provides comfortable budget accommodations that are within easy walking distance of the springs.

OUTLYING AREAS

The outlying areas of Pagosa Springs also provide accommodation options, though visitors will need a car to get to these spots. Located west of the downtown hub, Pagosa Springs Inn and Suites is an elegant hotel with a swimming pool and hot tub, plus a complimentary hot breakfast each morning— a must for eager skiers. Nearby Hillside Inn also offers a pool and hot tub, and is only a short drive away from the Pagosa Springs Golf Club. West Pagosa Springs also has a few big-name chain hotels, including the Wyndham Pagosa and the EconoLodge.

East of Pagosa Springs, travelers are welcome to spend the night in the wilderness at the High Country Lodge, a rustic accommodation choice that offers both log cabins and hotel rooms in a secluded area. The large stone fireplace in the main lodge and the four hot tubs are the perfect place to warm up after a day in the snow and the on-site steakhouse will provide the nourishment to ski the next day too.
